Registry lookup

The name is queried with RDAP, the official registration-data protocol that replaced whois. A record means the domain is registered; a not-found answer means it is free.

Live DNS cross-check

Cloudflare's DNS-over-HTTPS resolver is asked for the nameservers, MX and A records. If DNS exists, the domain is registered no matter what any single registry says.

Frequently asked questions

How does the availability check work?
The page asks the registry directly through RDAP, the official registration-data protocol, and cross-checks live DNS records. A registry record means the name is registered; a not-found answer with no DNS records means it is available. Everything runs in your browser.
Is the result authoritative?
For the major TLDs the check reflects the registry's own data, so it is as good as a whois lookup. A registry can still hold a name between checks, and premium names are available but cost more. Always confirm at a registrar before relying on it.
What does "taken" mean?
Taken means a registration record exists, so the name is owned by someone and cannot be registered by you unless it expires or is transferred. You still get registrar, creation and expiry details where the registry publishes them.
Do you store the domains I check?
No. Checks run entirely in your browser. The optional recent-searches list is saved in your own browser storage and is never sent to a server.
Are the suggestions guaranteed to be available?
Suggestions are checked the same way as your main search at the moment you search, but availability changes constantly. Treat a suggestion marked available as a strong indication and confirm it at a registrar.
Why does a check sometimes fail?
Not every registry publishes an RDAP endpoint or allows browser requests, and busy registries rate-limit lookups. When that happens the result is shown as unknown rather than guessed.
